In 1997, The Climate Trust was founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to assist new fossil-­fueled power plants in complying with the Oregon Carbon Dioxide Standard – the nation's first legislation to curb emissions of carbon dioxide. The Climate Trust fulfills its mission by providing expertise, financing, and inspiration to accelerate innovative climate solutions that endure. In order to arrest the rise in greenhouse gas emissions and to avoid the most dangerous impacts of climate change, The Trust works to accelerate project implementation, develop financing solutions, and establish a supportive policy environment in the renewable energy, agriculture, forestry and energy efficiency sectors.

The Trust has evolved into a nationally recognized innovator and quality leader in the carbon market. Since its founding, The Trust has directed over $18 million in financing for emission reduction projects, managed 2 large-­scale voluntary carbon programs, and has reduced 1 million tons of greenhouse gases –equivalent to eliminating the emissions from almost 200,000 cars! The Trust’s diverse and innovative project portfolio includes 17 active projects in eight sectors, which are anticipated to mitigate 1.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in years to come.

About the Position
The incoming Executive Director will inherit an organization with a solid national reputation, a highly skilled staff, a prestigious Board, and established financial footing. The new Executive Director will assume the top staff leadership role at an opportune time. Over the past several months, the Board and staff have engaged in a strategic planning process to re-­envision The Climate Trust’s core functions in climate policy, the compliance offset market and voluntary offset market. While The Climate Trust has charted new directions, the Board sees the outcomes of the process as a guide rather than a mandate for the incoming Executive Director. The new Executive Director will be expected to bring a new vision and voice to successfully position The Climate Trust as a necessary leader in the national transition to a low-­carbon economy.

In addition, the Executive Director will oversee The Climate Trust’s strategic and programmatic operations, lead the 10-­member staff, manage the annual operating budget of $1.5 million, oversee placement of $7million in offset projects, and play a visible role in revenue and policy development. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities
• Provide visionary and strategic leadership and translate that vision into plans and concrete actions to advance the organization’s mission, revenue development, impact, and growth.
• Provide leadership in revenue development and fundraising by identifying and securing new funding opportunities, and fostering positive relations with existing and potential funders and donors.
• Manage and evolve program and service offerings to ensure a competitive position in the industry, increase market share, and develop new markets.
• Oversee and direct growth of the offset portfolio.
• Represent and promote The Climate Trust at legislative sessions, committee meetings, public speaking engagements, media interviews, and other public functions.
• Motivate, develop, and lead the staff and ensure a respectful and dynamic work environment.
• Develop and recommend annual budget for Board approval, prudently manage resources, and ensure fiscal responsibility and security. Serve as a member of the Board of Directors and support the Board by presiding over meetings, advising and informing Board members, and facilitating communication between the Board and staff.

Job Requirements: Required qualifications
• The ideal candidate will possess or exhibit the following characteristics:
• A minimum of 10 years as a senior executive in an environmental or energy-­related organization—ideally with a combination of both nonprofit and for-­profit experience
• The ability to think strategically and critically, and synthesize ␣ Proven organizational management skills and outstanding financial planning ability and experience
• A charismatic, inspiring and empowering leadership style ␣ A results orientation with a track record of mobilizing teams to accomplish big agendas
• Capacity to build and maintain relationships
• Commitment to and skill at community engagement, shared leadership and collaboration
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Commitment to climate change mitigation
• College degree required; advanced degree a plus
• Ability and willingness to travel

Preferred qualifications
• Policy experience, especially at a regional or federal level
• Contract negotiation experience
• Mastery of the technical aspects of carbon offsets
• Mastery of the policy aspects of carbon offsets
